Swim Lessons

Classes are offered in winter, spring and summer terms.

Pre School Swim Lessons

  • Swim lessons for ages 3-6 focus on developing water comfort and basic swimming skills through fun, engaging activities.
  • Emphasis is placed on safety, building confidence and introducing foundational techniques like floating, kicking and simple strokes in a supportive environment.
  • This class will be offering three types of eight 25-minute sessions: Session 1 (2x per week during weeks 1-4), Session 2 (2x per week during weeks 5-9) and an eight week session (1x per week).  

Youth Swim Lessons

  • These courses are designed to teach participants (ages 6-14) the skills and knowledge needed to learn and develop various swimming skills and general water safety.
  • Up to four participants will be instructed by a Red Cross LG/WSI certified instructor for eight 25-minute sessions over the course of four weeks.
  • Participants displaying adequate skills of course requirements may advance to level 2 with the instructor's approval. The Aquatics Coordinator can provide additional information about the required skills.

Lifeguard Training & Certifications

Lifeguard Training

  • The course covers skills for responding to aquatic emergencies, including deep and shallow water rescue, rapid extrication and CPR for all ages, as well as the use of AEDs and other life-saving equipment.
  • Completion awards certifications in Lifeguarding (including deep water), CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers, and First Aid through the American Red Cross.
  • 10-week course, offered winter and spring terms. 
  • Registration begins the week of Nov. 11. 

Lifeguard Certification

  • This course equips participants with the skills and knowledge to handle aquatic emergencies. It covers water rescues, first aid and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers.
  • Three-day course is offered during spring break and spring term.
  • Registration begins Dec. 2. 

Lifeguard Recertification 

  • The American Red Cross Lifeguard Recertification course is designed to update and renew lifeguarding skills, including rescue techniques, CPR/AED and first aid.
  • Successful completion maintains certification and ensures readiness for emergency situations.
  • One day course offered fall and spring term.

Water Safety Instructor Certification

  • The American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification trains individuals to teach swimming and water safety courses. It covers instructional techniques, water safety principles and effective teaching strategies for a range of ages and skill levels.

Family Swim

Family swim is a great way to share the fun of the Dixon Pool. When participating in family swim time, the following supervision limits and guidelines will be strictly enforced:

  • Must be accompanied by a participating adult (age 18 or older) at all times
  • May only participate during Family Access Hours  
  • If a child is not able to move in the water without feet touching the bottom or needs to wear a life-jacket, the child is considered a non-swimmer. Only three “non-swimmers” per adult and the adult must be in the water within arm’s reach of the children.
  • Only five “swimmers” per adult and the adult must be able to directly observe the children.
  • Babies are allowed in the pool with plastic swim diapers

Kayak Roll Sessions

  • Come learn how to perform effective kayak rolls that allow you to quickly right your boat.
  • Classes are offered in the Dixon Recreational Center Pool. 
  • Wednesdays, 8-9:30 p.m., Sept. 25 - Nov. 11
  • No registration is needed
  • Fee is $5 for OSU Students, Rec Sports Members and day pass holders. Fees are paid day of at the Dixon entry desks.  

Note: If you bring your kayak, you must drop it off in the back loading dock and thoroughly spray/clean the boat inside and out before dropping it off on the pool deck.
