Beep Ball Rules

I. Governing Rules

The Major League Baseball Home Run Derby rules will apply in all cases except where a special Oregon State University Intramurals rule applies.

II. Eligibility

All participants must be either students registered at Oregon State University or Faculty/Staff/Affiliate with a Recreational Sports Membership. For more information on eligibility, consult the Intramurals Handbook.

III. Uniforms/Equipment

  • No jewelry (earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings, etc.) is allowed on the field at any time. Players must remove items immediately or leave the event.
  • Players are required to provide their own bats.
  • No baseball or ASA-banned bats are allowed. Umpires will have a list with pictures of bats that are deemed illegal by ASA, and umpires will have the final say for a bat’s eligibility. Each player is responsible for providing their own bat.
  • Athletic, closed-toe shoes are required.

IV. Pre-Event

  • Players must register on IMLeagues by 2:00 p.m. the Friday prior to the event.

V. Event Structure

  • Players will participate in rounds with 10 outs in each round.
  • The top half of the players with the most cumulative home runs will proceed to the semifinals after the first round.
  • The top two players in the semifinals will advance to the final round.
  • Tie breaker: Home run total based upon traditional scoring (1 ball, 1 point).
  • Tie breaker if still tied: Distance including roll.
  • Home run totals will start over in the semifinal and final rounds.
  • A pitcher will be provided, or participants may bring their own pitcher.
  • Beep Ball softballs will be used.

VI. Event Definitions

  • An out is any swing that does not result in a home run.
  • A round consists of 10 pitches.

Home Runs

  • Home runs are any ball that travels past the arch marked with corner flags for “Home Run Territory.”
  • Balls hitting cones/flags will not be counted as home runs.

VII. Conduct

The Intramurals program promotes positive sportsmanship at all contests and activities. Unsportsmanlike conduct includes actions which are unbecoming to an ethical, fair, and honorable individual. It consists of acts of deceit, disrespect, or vulgarity and includes taunting.

VIII. Ejections

Any player ejected from a game will be immediately suspended from participating in all Intramurals activities. The ejected player must then make an appointment with the Coordinator of Intramurals and Sport Coordinator to determine the length of suspension and any other sanctions. The following actions can result in ejections from Intramurals:

  • Improper language
  • Unsporting conduct
