3V3 Basketball Tournament Rules

I. Governing Rules

The rules of the National Federation of State High School Athletic Associations will apply in all cases except where a special Oregon State University Intramural Sports rule applies.

II. Eligibility

All participants must be either students registered at Oregon State University or Faculty/Staff/Affiliate with a Recreational Sports Membership. For more information on eligibility, consult the Intramural Sports Handbook.

III. Uniforms/Equipment

A. Jewelry and attire

  • No jewelry (earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings, etc.) is allowed on the court at any time. Players must remove items immediately or leave the game.
  • Appropriate athletic attire must be worn.
  • No hoodies allowed.

B. Footwear

  • No shoes that leave black or scuff marks, boots, or sandals are permitted.
  • Athletic, closed-toe shoes must be worn.

C. Protective equipment

  • No braces, casts, guards, or supports that may cause other players harm are permitted.

D. Game ball

  • Teams must provide their own game ball.
  • Basketballs may be checked out from Equipment Issue in the Dixon Recreation Center.

IV. Pre-Event

A. Facility entry

  • All participants must bring their ID card to enter the facility.

B. Team manager meeting

  • Team managers will take part in a meeting prior to the start of the tournament.

C. Check-in

  • Team managers must check in with the supervisor on duty before each game to verify their team’s roster.

V. Event Structure

  • Game time listed on the schedule is the official game time.
  • You must have three (3) players on the court ready for play at game time; otherwise a forfeit will be awarded to the opposing team. Games may be completed with only two players, but not just one player.
  • Scorekeepers will keep the official game time.
  • The game will be played to 15 points or 15 minutes, whichever comes first. Championship games in each division have no time limit.
  • If the score is tied at the end of 15 minutes, the game goes to overtime. A coin flip determines which team has the initial possession. The winner is the first team to score 3 points in overtime.
  • To begin the game, a coin toss will determine the right to possession or pass possession to the opposing team.
  • Substitutions: Players may substitute only during a dead ball. Players must report to the scorekeeper.
  • Game over: At the completion of the game, each manager must sign the score sheet.

VI. Time-Outs

  • Each team is allowed one 45-second time-out per game.

VII. Event Definitions

  • An opposing player must check the ball before it is put into play. The ball must be passed to a teammate to begin play (not dribbled).
  • There is no “Make It Take It.” The ball changes possession after each scored basket.
  • All jump balls become the possession of the defensive team.
  • When in play, the ball must be “taken back” on each change of possession. Both feet must be established behind the two-point arc.

Scoring

  • Baskets made from inside the arc count as one point.
  • Baskets made when the shooter has both feet behind the arc count as two points.

Fouls

  • For the first six (6) fouls, the ball is taken back by the fouled team to resume play.
  • Beginning with the seventh (7) team foul, the player fouled will be awarded one (1) or two (2) free throws.
  • If the foul occurs outside the 20-foot arc, the player is awarded two (2) free throws.

1. After the free throw

  • The ball changes possession whether the free throws were successful or not.

2. On the tenth (10th) team foul

  • The player will be awarded one (1) or two (2) free throws.
  • Regardless of whether the player makes or misses the free throws, the shooting team retains possession.

3. Fouled while shooting (basket made)

  • If the shooting team is fouled in the act of shooting and the basket is made, the shot counts, the point(s) count, and the shooting team retains possession for all fouls 1–10.

4. Fouled while shooting (basket not made)

  • If the shooting team is fouled in the act of shooting and the basket is not made, the shooting team retains possession of the ball for fouls 1–7.
  • For fouls 7–10, the team will shoot one (1) free throw and the defense team will get the ball.
  • On the 10th foul, the team will shoot one (1) free throw and the shooting team will retain possession.

Free throws

  • All free throws are dead balls.

VIII. Conduct

The Intramural Sports program promotes positive sportsmanship at all contests and activities. Unsportsmanlike conduct includes actions that are unbecoming to an ethical, fair, and honorable individual. It consists of acts of deceit, disrespect, or vulgarity and includes taunting.

IX. Ejections

Any player ejected from a game will be immediately suspended from participating in all Intramural Sports activities. The ejected player must then make an appointment with the Coordinator of Intramural Sports and Sports Coordinator to determine the length of suspension and any other sanctions.

Actions that can result in ejection

  • Improper language and unsporting conduct
  • Dunking in warm-ups, halftime, timeouts, after the game, or any time that is not in the normal course of play

Actions that result in immediate ejection

  • Two technical fouls
  • Flagrant foul

All other Intramural Sport Policies and Basketball Rules will apply.
