Gabby Paul is a Freshman at Oregon State University and has found meaningful connections at Recreational Sports. A Corvallis native, Paul has always been familiar with Oregon State’s campus, but this year she has immersed herself in the full college experience for the first time.  She purchased an IM Pass to participate in Intramural Sports leagues. Paul shared: “My first impression of Dixon is that it was really impressive. There is so much variety.  Dance studios, running tracks, and volleyball. It's very well kept too.”

Paul shared that she enjoys the programming that Rec Sports offers. "The variety is what sets Rec Sports apart from being merely a gym; it is an all-encompassing recreation center which has something for everyone," Paul stated.

Gabby found a home at Rec Sports through Intramural Sports; participating in four teams this term. Gabby enjoys participating in IM Corn Hole, Volleyball, and women’s and co-ed Flag Football. She plays to have fun with sports she enjoys, and in the process, she has met other members of the Oregon State community. Teamwork and competition bring people together. Paul shared, “Intramural sports is a great way to interact with people I wouldn’t normally come into contact with."

Paul plays Intramural Sports to give herself a structured break from school. As a freshman Biology student, she is challenged with a demanding schedule.  “It's important to schedule time to go play sports for an hour- and it's a much-needed break for me,” she said.

Throughout the fall term, Gabby has competed weekly in an intramural volleyball league and two two flag football teams. One weekend she entered herself in the IM Corn Hole Tournament. For most people, this would be a lot of commitment. For Gabby, a self-professed lover of sports, each game is a new opportunity to enjoy herself.

She shared her story of a recent flag football playoff game. It was double overtime. There was intensity in the air. A defender tipped a pass, and a scramble ensued to save the play. Paul caught the football. She ran into the end zone to put her team in the lead, and ultimately win the game.

For many students at Oregon State, Intramural Sports provides an environment where sports happen in a fun and structured environment. For Gabby, her participation in Intramural Sports is a bridge between her academic life and the greater college experience. As a freshman at this university, her involvement has helped connect her to more communities and pursue her own wellness.
